Social Servers?

Hello, I'm Rasnok.
This is my first post so don't get wrong, I'm not going to great that this.

Ok, so basically I had this really good idea to set up a server with a couple of friends just to mess about on and get a few more people to meet and socialise with. But we don't want the expenses of making a massive plugin horded server to attract players. So this is what I'm asking, is there any good way of getting mature friendly people without filtering through a big mainstream server?

I think were going with the name JustMinecraft. And the idea is we pick people up of PMC and other Minecraft websites. Although I haven't decided to make the server whitelisted or not.

I've always hoped we could attract more adult players to our server. Unfortunately, there are just SO many younger Minecraft players that it's kind of like searching for needles in a haystack. What you're doing here on this forum post is probably your best bet. But if you're going to try to attract lots of people to the server, you'll end up just running into the general demographic problem, and so you kind of have to choose between one or the other: A select group of people that you meet slowly over time, or a large public server where everyone's welcome.

I'd love to help, but I'm on my Ipod at the moment and it's really hard to write large amounts of text. I have loads of ideas, and I'll PM you my Skype.

Also - I own a gaming clan where all the members apply via application, because of this trolls aren't accepted into the clan, and the members are friendly and mature. If you need players to help build the server spawn or play on it then I'm sure they can come on and help.

That's a really good suggestion TheShadbusher, do you have a Skype account? I'd love it if you were able to be apart of this.

You could try what I do and make the server the way you want, and listen to the suggestions of your player base, changing the server as both they and you see fit.

If people like your server, they'll join it. No need to bend to the will of a few choice people to get them to stay on. Make it how you want, and, if you like the suggestions of your players, change some things to get it to a place where both you and your players enjoy it. There isn't anything worse than running a server you yourself wouldn't want to play on.

For names, perhaps JustMinecraft? I'm not really that good at making up names without a good understanding of the server and its owner.

EDIT: Would you like to form a little server-group? We could cooperate and share ideas to further the servers in the group. If you'd like, you can add me on Skype. I'll PM my Skype name if you're interested.

Try something with your username for the server name.

A good way to have return players [regulars] is to have a variety of worlds, such as creative, survival and various games. Survival works well for us because players invest in their builds. The work hard for inventory and take pride in their work, plus most of the time thew work together and defend each other. Worlds with Creative tend to be unproductive, the players just fly around and goof off.

We offer all the above but most of our regulars are in the survival world, plus having a few shops scattered around like in the real world is nice so players don't have to travel back and forth to large spawn type store structures, they can in a sense buy and trade in their own neighborhood.

See this is what I want! How about I make a forum and link you all. From then we can start planning.

Kraxous I love your idea of making it professional, maybe that's because I'm a graphics designer in my work but hey ho.

H-MAN_25 you have the exact same ideas as myself, great minds think alike right?

And OldLinionMC you sound like a really good organiser and good person, your ideas are really good.

So how about it?

Yeah - to be honest every server has minigames now... Personally I prefer servers just for survival. Hub servers just mean maintenance is more difficult, and unless the owners are great, then it usually also means that the survival areas of the server aren't very well maintained. My suggestions would be:

  • - Be well organised [Have a website, forums]
  • - Don't have lots of plugins, but sometimes a random, fun plugin for players to mess around with improves the experience. Even something like when fishing you have a chance to get enchanted items - things like this keep players interested in the server.
  • - Make strict rules on griefing, swearing - that kind of thing. It sounds odd, but this will filter out the trolls.

Good Luck

I know exactly what you mean XD we have our own server thats all on its own host and everything. started out as a simple factions server, but because of our lack of player base (because of lack of advertising) we've slowly been adding more things, with a survival no PVP world being the newest (added because i saw that many people wanted that kind of server). we just need a player base that can give us feedback, because after that we can take out some things people dont want (minigames for example).

I'm also looking for a playerbase for my server (attempting to make a professional server). I'm not making a plugin hoarded server either, just the basics with a few little goodies. I'm not a massive fan of mini-games either. You guys seem awesome.

I think maybe, we should team up? Get a few more people like me and you, people that want to be owners of this sort of server to just put together a server and play it. I'm currently making a new Skype account which is going to be available to call me on.

We could discuss ideas and do this. What do you think?

Honesty, apart from just slowly hunting for new players who look into the same thing, its hard. I've been trying to do the same thing in my server, but to get people even looking at my server, i ended up having to add a few different plugins and minigames. I was never a huge fan of them but to get any amount of people sometimes you have to please the general public
