I recently received a good amount of money, and I'm wondering if I should spend it on advertising for my minecraft server. Has any one ever spent money on advertising? How much money? Where? How much players did you get?

If you are willing to bid on a paid slot on a voting site, that should be a massive boost to the player base. Whether or not you want yourself to be viewed amongst the likes of advertisements such as "Girls! Guns! Free OP! ExplosionAwesomePrisonMinigameCraft.kp" is your own decision to make.
Regardless, I'd say make sure your server is tried and tested; having your server and staff not running at 110% during your ad's time slot is a waste of money and effort. Also having a pretty banner that's more than just Adobe Fireworks animated text is a good idea; it's best to look both professional and unique, rather than just professional (though I do like the current ad in your forum signature.)
