Hi there,
I am looking into starting a "Feed The Beast" server but I have never tried to actually make a server before and as such am not totally sure what I’m actually doing.
I have downloaded the server file for Feed the Beast and even managed to successfully make it work and connect to it while being hosted on my own computer; however this was nothing more than a test as I don’t want it hosted from my machine.
What I am after is some guidance on finding a place to host the server as well as guidelines on how to install plugins for Economy, WorldEdit, WorldGuard and all the other plugins that one would find on a multiplayer server.
Since I know nothing technical about this I am doing it in little stages, so ideally a company that offers a free trial or 3 player limit introduction setup as I will need time to play with it to work out how to properly control if before I risk letting anyone actually try an log in! where its hosted needs to be upgradable for if/when the server goes live and we wish to build a minecraft community out of it. At the moment it’s an experiment we are conducting to see if we can sustain it and make it enjoyable
I have experience of Admin controls from another server but this is the technical side of it that I’m after, I’ve spent hour’s googling every combination of key words but can’t find specific info I need.
Key info needed.
+A trusted company that will host it, a free trial would be desirable but quality must win overall.
+a very brief overview of what’s needed, like a checklist so i don’t forget anything major.
+ideally a guide someone has written and lost in the internet covering this but its unlikely.
+anything else that could potentially be needed.
This is aimed at those who have set up mine craft servers on dedicated servers and who have experience of trusted companies and installing and managing plugins and mods. This is specifically aimed at Feed The Beast (in case that affects answers) which initially will be for friends to play on and explore with the desire to make it public once I’m confident enough with the controls to subject some poor people to survive on it.
Any help would be great as I feel I’m running in circles now.
Cheers

Blatant Lies!
Get your facts straight I would say before starting a Feed The Beast server, Then you would have known that you can NOT add 'bukkit' plugins to a FTB server atm.
This may change in the future it may not.

If i hosted it on my machine initially would that not affect the ability to transfere the world to a dedicated server company?
Or would it simply be uploading the map data to an external host and then start the server up again?
Ive got it working on my machine, but i cant find how to install plugins on it for Feed The Beast, nothing seems to be in the right place when i look at instructions based on normal Minecraft.
A How-To guide for this would be great! I may even write one if I ever figure it out!

I can help setting up plugins/permissions though I cannot recommend a server provider. But if you are looking to have a very small group to start with I would recommend hosting it on your computer or a friends to start so you can get the feel for everything before pitching in for a server (since they can be quite costly depending on the size you want). PM me if you'd like help with permissions and stuff.
