Well, I have set up 10 ranks in my permissions file (excluding mod and admin ranks). I was able to figure out how to deny lower ranks from creating factions. Oddly and frustratingly enough, the Factions plugin enables permissions for all users be default and the only way to undo this is to disable each individual permission.

So, it looks like I am... almost done!!! I am finished installing plugins and I think I've got everything just like I want it. I am absolutely thrilled! I cannot wait to download the Minecraft 1.3 Release Candidate and build my brand new PvP map! However, before I do that, I think that I will purchase a server and submit it here on PMC. Then, allow a small testing group in to ensure that everything works correctly.

This is very exciting stuff!

And Willem - I won't need the Multiverse plugin as I won't need multiple worlds UNLESS the nether counts as another world. In that case, I'll need it. Also, you need to publish your website before anyone can see it.

You just need to figure does factions have permissions compability.
You make 2 ranks and simply add acces for 1 to f create.
Or it is built in factions that they cost.
I think this is easier for you.
So people must work hard to make a faction.
And you can do so inviting and claiming costs too.

And 2 basic plugin you need.
Multiverse-allows you to create multiple worlds. (example if you wan't to make a VIP world or skylands world you need it. Even if you have no plans atm it is good to have.
World border-don't let players travel too far and make lag whit it

After watching many videos and doing much research, I have successfully set up a ranking system on my server! By using a combination of the PaidRanks and PermissionsEx plugins, a player can obtain higher ranks by paying fixed amounts of money. However, there is one problem I am encountering: I want to make it where a player cannot start a faction until they have reached a certain rank. Does anyone know how I can do this? Other than that, things are going pretty smoothly. In fact, I hope to have the server finished pretty soon.

So you will have a member rank whit permissions, VIP ranks and then staff ranks?
Ic ould try help you config permissions if you would like.

I suggest to take voxelsniper plugin. You can create epic things whit it. It's simular to world guard but way more betetr options.
And i think NoCheatPlus is betetr than AntiCheat, but im not sure.

Also if u wan't a big hassle around the money system get.

Alright, alright everyone! I have read your posts (thanks for all the responses btw) and believe that it would be a good idea to install a permissions plugin just to reward those who donate. Now, I have heard that configuring permissions can be a PAIN so if anyone would like to help me out here, please, do so - and remember, I am not setting up a ranking system, I just need to use the plugin to reward the people who donate by giving them special abilities or something.

Most of the above posts cover things that I have already done but thanks for the help anyways guys! Also, the server is up now - but it won't be up all the time since I like to sleep and stuff.

To get people to join a server i HIGHLY suggest posting on sites such as planetminecraft and minecraftservers.net. Also it isn't necessary getting mcforge to run your server. Its simple enough to just get some nice plugins such as, Essentials, World Guard, Factions, Vault: Iconomy ect, And World Edit. These are just a few of the plugins that i use on my server! To get people to vote for your server and get a higher boost in the server list, get Votifier. Its a plugin where you can get "Liseners" to vote data and then give the voter items, money, frankly what ever you want! But i realy think it's any point to release the server to the public before 1.3 comes out. (it comes out 1st August)
Server would neeb fresh map anyway.
TIll then you should just test and learn plugins and search for a good host to get a quick start when 1.3 comes out.
It takes usually a week or so for the all most important plugins to update,
Later we can add extra plugins for better gameplay.

Also if to talk about plugins check out voxelsniper. Like world edit but better

Action guy if yo uwant to get donations you MUST get permissions. And yes PermissionsEX is best.
Because people donate to get something so when u offer something to them they more likely donate.

If the PVP-toggle u talk about is the one where u can choose can players hurt you or no... He wanted a pvp server.
(if a pvp server i suggest you to go for anarchy server, griefing allowed and so but only donatos have acces to TNT and lava to minimize the overcap griefing. Also good way for you to get money)

Okay: Well, I'm just gonna answer all/most of your questions here (sorry I didn't read other posts, but..)
Okay - First off: Bukkit. Bukkit all the way! Bukkit is best because it's got the most plugins etc.. so, thats a BIG plus. MCForge is if you're home-hosting, really. But I'd reccomend renting a server. For about 25 players you should only need like 1GB RAM, so 50 should only be about 2 (just don't overload your server with plugins!). Use things like NoLagg, too. Installing plugins is pretty easy, you just drag and drop the .jar files in to the "plugins" folder of your server directory, type /reload in-game, and you're good to go! I'll just reccomend a few plugins here: WorldGuard, WorldEdit, Essentials/CommandBook, Deadbolt (Chest Protection) and PvPToggle (very useful!)

You won't need a permissions plugin (but if you do need one, PermissionsEX is good - although getting permissions is fun, because then you can do stuff like:
100 Kills = Rank [ContractKiller] which you have the power to place fire? or whatever. Your choice. But if you want money you pretty much NEED iConomy. It's essential, and most plugins utilize it.

Hey guys, I don't know why I gave you my IP for Hamachi. The Network ID is "Grape Soda". So type that along with "wolf" and you should be good to go.

Also, I actually wasn't sure if I wanted to include ranks on my PvP server since they end up being quite useless in the long-run. I was actually just going to make everything monetary based. $100,000 to start a faction, eh?

So, if I chose not to include a ranking system on my server, would I still need the permissions plugin?

Permissions is like a plugin that allows u to make ranks.
U make different ranks and add diffrenet permissions for the ranks.
So like u can make Guest,Member,VIP and so on

ANd yes you need it quite a bit

You're using iconomy as ur shop right?
IF u have chest shop i suggest u to make some market area and install some plugin to make plots for players so they can create theyr own shop.

In August the 1st 1.3.0 comes out so you need fresh map. (for new structures added in 1.3) Just try out the plugins and try to make a list of some u want.

Wow Willem, that sounds fantastic! If you could really be one of my first donors for this server, that would really, really, help out! When I get my server on a more dedicated connection, I certainly get in contact with you.

Alright everyone, I have added two more plugins to my server: WorldEdit and WorldGuard. I have used WorldGuard to more accurately define the borders of my spawn area and have set up a no-PvP, no-griefing zone within this area. I THOUGHT that one could use WorldGuard to define an area and then use the Factions plugin to make that area into a SafeZone... but I couldn't figure that out. So for now, I am using WorldGuard alone to protect my spawn. I just hope that the two plugins (Factions and WorldGuard) do not interfere with each other.

Another thing, thanks for your help with finding good plugins RoboShark. There is one more I forgot to add to the list: I need a good plugin that can set teleportation and spawn points like if one wanted to travel to the shop, they could just type /shop.

Id suggest zSuperHost.com because its very cheap and the server is very fast. Also, their support is amazing.

I've started hosting my own server from my computer; it's actually quite easy and basically free for me. RAM is so cheap these days, you can get 16GB of DDr3 for $175 easily.

My internet is not even that great, but it's fine for up to 20 players so far, they're all running it lag free.

I looked up the commands for the Faction plugin and learned how to claim land for a SafeZone (thanks!). Unfortunately, I am running into a very odd problem. When I claim a safezone, I assume that I am supposed to stand in the center of what I want to claim. That makes sense right? Well, when I did that to claim a safezone of radius 1 (which equals 16x16 blocks for some reason), it is claiming unevenly. I took a screenshot to explain my situation.

The block in the middle with the torch on top is where I stood when I claimed the land and the 4 surrounding grass blocks represent the safezone borders. Why is this occurring?

Alright guys, I have gotten pretty far in the development of my server since I started this thread. So far I have downloaded CraftBukkit and have installed these plugins:

- BorderGuard
- ChestShop3
- ColoredSigns
- Factions
- iConomy
- Vault

I need more plugins and have done plenty of searching but have come up empty handed every time. These are some plugins I need if anyone wold like to make a recommendation:

- Plugin that allows people to /sethome and /home. Surprisingly, this plugin has been very difficult to find. I have found a few that were PERFECT but the download links were broken.
- Plugin that allows for protection of certain areas. I need spawn protection and a war zone for my PvP server. The plugins must allow for easy and precise marking of circular and other complex areas.
- Plugin that marks non-PvP areas and prevents players from harming each other.
- Informational plugin that generates messages for each player in the chat log in a continuous cycle and when a player spawns.
- Plugin that allows for easy set-up and manipulation of a ranking system. I am still not sure whether I want to use and ranking system so just throw anything at me.

I think that's it for now unless you guys have any other recommendations for what plugins might be good for a PvP server. Also, I know I will need some anti-hacking/modding software/plugins but am not sure where to start.

Try not to judge me too badly by that, I am learning. And you said something about a handy-dandy "plug-in manager". That sounds helpful.

yeah planetminecraft is actually perfect for etting it off the ground make sure you have a nice ad from day one and u can get featured pretty easily then u get otns of players really quickly

I actually did some more research and found a cheaper and better reviewed hosting website called www.zsuperhost.com. They seem to be cheaper and have a better layout when it comes to Minecraft server hosting.

Also, I understand donations can help completely pay for the cost of renting a server, the problem is getting your server off the ground.

ud only need like 5gbs of ram for 50 people and yeah it gets pretty expensive but u can probably find donors it didnt take me too long to have the server start paying for itself

So, to support 50 people I would need around 7 GBs of RAM? Daaaaaannnnng! If I were to rent a server that'd be around $1800 a year. That's pretty hefty.

Looks like I may have to wait a bit longer than I expected before I can start my own PvP server.

well the sites all have estimates if your using 10 plugins then i would suggest around 1gbs of ram for 10 people for lag-free

That makes sense, but I am on a budget and the more RAM you select, the bigger the cost. So, could anyone calculate the minimum amount of RAM that would be necessary for a high-traffic server to run effectively without lag?

well mcforge is software for hosting your ownserver but i suggest you rent your server from a site like mycraftbox.com unless you have very good internet and a high performance computer...
