Tech Question - GPUtv

So I play Java edition on an old hp laptop, but I have recently acquired an old desktop, a Dell XPS Studio 8100 (from 2010 I think?) and was hoping to be able to play on that too. It runs surprisingly well, and fast for an older PC. However, it has integrated graphics that is not compatible with the OpenGL requirements.

I was looking at cheap used graphics cards but Im not sure what to get. The Geforce 430 looked promising but my power supply is only 18A and it requires 22A. Im not very interested in buying a new power supply. :/.

Also, Im not sure how OpenGL works exactly. some places say the 430 is openGL 4.0 compatible and some say 4.6 - is anything that runs 4.0 able to run 4.x? 4 point anything?

It is looking like a no-go, but if anyone can suggest a GPU that I could purchase, or point me to a good resource I would appreciate it. Java edition requires OpenGL 4.4 at a minimum.

Thanks!

Not a great time to buy gpus rn, but I would look at some budget builds and google what version of opengl those cards can run. Best bet would probably be a mobo/gpu/power supply bundle. Even low end cards are going nuts rn.

I would personally never feel comfortable playing anything on a $60 card but I can't speak much on that since I paid $700 for a 3070.

r/lowendgaming would probably be a great place to look/ask

**for you I would suggest a minimum of a gtx 980. Still a solid card years later, will probably tide you over for years to come. Anything under that really isnt worth the time messing with.

thanks for the suggestions - Ill go look there. Just seeing if there was anything to make what I already have work.

And anything is better than the tiny laptop I play on now, ha. I'm not a super gamer, I really only play MC anymore, and not too often at that. I think I just enjoy the low-pressure, open-endedness of MC.

Do you have a budget for a gpu?

I mean, I'd prefer $60 or less, and don't mind used. But Id welcome other options, even if just to give me some more points to jump from.

According to Dell specs on this machine, you should have a 350w power supply fitted. That being the case, here is a link to a Nvidia 710 pci-e card with 2gb ram.
It's recommeded to have a min. of 300w psu, so you are just within limit. Not too dear, and should suffice for what you are trying to acheive. However, from exprience, adding a new componant to an old setup might cause the psu to die. It's always a chance you take when doing something like this.

For $60, you're not really gonna get anything good or future proof, I wouldn't expect to be able to comfortably play most games on a gt 430, but minecraft should/could be fine, I know low end PCs can have some performance issues with newer versions of minecraft.

Minecraft is really the only thing I play anyways. I just play for a few days every few months when I get stressed out.

Im not expecting anything too future proof anyways on an older PC like this, just anything that will work at all without me having to buy a bunch of new parts.
