I tried to enchant a diamond sword and I do indeed have 30 levels. I tried to enchant it, but the enchant options are greyed out. Is this some sort of glitch?

That's the pictures of the glitch that I encountered.

I don't know if it's supposed to work like that but, from what I know, it shouldn't work like that. Why is the middle enchant slot empty anyways?

Ah, yes. Forgot to mention that. Bookshelves increase the quality of the enchants, and also, I believe, allow for that second slot to open. Potentially.

Yep, this is the case. Well, they increase the quality of enchantments. Not entirely positive about opening up the other slots.

Minecraft WikiNearby bookshelves raise the available enchantment levels; without any bookshelves the experience level cost will never exceed 8.

As of 1.8, in order to enchant, you have to use 1-3 pieces of Lapis Lazuli in the second slot of the enchanting table.

Also, regarding the second slot, I believe that that's part of the randomness on enchanting. Sometimes it might be there, sometimes not. Try adding Lapis and seeing if it works.

I tried it 2 more times, once in creative, once in survival. I used lapis, and only one slot ungreyed (in survival, both slots were in creative). The middle slot is still empty.
