Hi, I'm "kinda" new to the whole Minecraft world, although I'm not too much of a noob...I know a heck of a lot more than I did last year lol. Anyways, my son wants to play multiplayer with me on our LAN (I just learned how to connect to it) But it says that I cannot connect because the name is already taken. Does this mean that we cannot play multiplayer on the same account? I even made a new profile to see if that does anything (I have no clue what profiles do).
So my question is this, do I have to buy another copy of Minecraft and create a new account just to play multiplayer with my son on our home network???

Remember that LAN can be quite unstable at times. A self-hosted server is free, but takes more work to set up. LAN should have no problems on an good network though.

I see your question has been answered, but I figured I would explain profiles. Profiles are for creating different setting groups. For example "profile #1" could be a setting that you've created that tells your launcher to play version 1.6.4 with x mods while "profile #2" could be a setting you've created that tells your launcher to play version 1.8 without mods.
