Ive played Minecraft Bedrock, but wanted to give Java a try... seems like there are more options. I've bought and dowloaded the launcher but I CANNOT get the thing to load. I've unistalled and reinstalled. Tried reinstalling from a different browser. Gone to Java website and downloaded. Tried the compatibility to Vista and then back again. Tried to just move compatibility to Windows 8 to play. Have restarted and updated all I can find on my system. Am I just going to have to look for a refund? I'm very much frustrated!!

I am assuming you are using the Vanilla minecraft launcher. Whilst my suggestion below might seem like a learning experience, its well worth it, and MultiMC is a very good launcher, it'll make your setup much easier.
Using an alternative minecraft launcher called MultiMC which is available here : https://multimc.org/

Easyto set up. Install it, open it, right-click on the window, choose create instance, choose your MC version, click ok, add a minecraft
account via the settings / accounts and away you go - usually takes a minute or two at most. Excellent for modded as well as Vanilla. MultiMC takes care of installing Forge with a single click.

Here is a small document (open with Wordpad) showing how to install Forge in MultiMC on one of your Minecraft instances :

MultiMC doesn't work with cracked accounts. My suggestion wasn't for doing that. I have found that the Vanilla launcher often overlaps files from different minecraft versions in the same named directories and ends up giving errors that are really hard to track down. MultiMC is much better at keeping all your instance files in seperate locations, thus, less installation issues, plus 1 click Forge, liteloader and Fabric installation, just makes for an easier modding experience.
