When I download maps, it comes out as a .bin file, I cannot extract it and cannot turn it into a zip file. I've checked loads of tutorials and can't find anything to solve this problem. I download it of a 'mirror' download, and on the fence on why that could be the reason. Any help would be appreciated.

Is this true for all maps, and are you downloading from Planet Minecraft? It could just be whoever you're downloading it from didn't upload the correct or whole file, a mirror link is a site housing the file that is planetminecraft.com. Try downloading some other maps or try opening it with 7-Zip (just in case the file somehow got the wrong extension). It should be a zip file which you would extract to your saves folder.
Hello!
It's very odd to distribute a map via a .bin file. You might want to find a different mirror for the map you're trying to download. BIN files are "binary" files, they're not really compressed archive files, which makes me worry about a potential virus.
