...do I delete the 1.8 console first or download the new console first? Does it matter how I replace the old console? My world won't be erased, right?

the .exe will not automatically delete the files it created.
in short you can just delete the .exe and replace it with the new version.
if your feeling skeptical you can backup the world file by copying the folder
