Greetings Fellow Players!
I am making this topic to ask for some help. I recently purchased a minecraft server for 20 players. But as I did some research for gamemodes all that came up were Faction or Towny servers.
Thats why I am asking here for ideas to base my server off. Please leave in the comments ideas or suggestions

If you have some money to spare, I'd recommend that you hire a plugin developer to make a customised minigame for you which is 100% unique to your Server.
Just like 0x10c said, you have to make it unique as many minecraft players already have servers which they play on for certain things. i.e. Creative, Factions and KitPvP.
If you want your Server to be really successful, then I'd definitely recommend hiring a plugin developer to develop a minigames plugin which you'd think would attract players and be really fun.
However, don't make it too simple or too complex. Most people do not like games which are simple i.e. basic PvP but also games which are too complex with long storylines.

But I'm struggling on whats original?
Something original... I don't recommend doing towny or factions unless it has some unique twist to it.
Try and find something that hasn't been done before (or hasn't been done many times).
Also, look at your own server and see if you would play on it. If I found a factions or towny server I know I wouldn't even log on because I already know of two good factions and towny servers.
