What's wrong with my server????

Hi everyone. I started my server about 3 months ago and since then I have not been getting many players. Honestly, I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Firstly, I have posted the ip on many sites, including this one. I spent ages configuring plugins, building a spawn, shops, a spleef arena, finding a good staff team etc. Yet when I do update my server on PMC no one joins because all the big servers update right after I do. If I do manage to get some players they either ask to apply for admin or co-owner. I try my best to stall them but no, if there's another person on they will say that we are good on staff and then they leave or they will come on and start swearing, being racist, cursing at other players etc. But the absolute worst type of player are those who join, don't say anything when I welcome them, don't move and then leave after around 10 seconds.

Seriously, is my server really that bad that those are the only type of players I get? Also quite alot of people will say they will be back in 10 minutes yet have not joined for days or weeks on end. And when I get mad because everyone keeps leaving for absolutely no reason at all, anyone left will be like :O and then leave. It really makes me want to hit someone because of these people. If they don't like the look of my server then why join it in the first place? Why do people constantly say "you there?'' when I'm afk for 10 seconds? And why do people have to ask other players on my server if they know any good servers to join? Is it a problem with my server or has Minecraft really become this bad.

If anyone can tell me how to fix this or how to get more people on, then please don't hesitate to speak up. I'm really thinking about shutting down my server because of this.

-Thanks

I've hosted servers for 2 years. I never got many players, but what I DID get was friends. Honestly, that's all I could ask for.

I've been in this boat many times, and honestly it's hard to say how to get players and make the stay on your server. However, follow these tips and I'm sure it will help some.

- (Voting Links): Get players to vote. Encourage voting by giving rewards such as currency and items. Make sure if you give currency that it's a decent amount and they can actually spend it on something in the server that will improve their experience. Also, every time you list your server on a voting website, it is assigned to the new servers section. Shortly after submitting your server to the voting website, I've always noticed a lot of players joining. The best way to do this is load up about 5-10 voting website, put in all your server information required on each one, then submit your server to the website at the same time. Be prepared! If you do this correctly, many players will join your server within minutes (about 10-20). Make sure everything is right in your server so players know where to go and how to have fun.

- (Unique Server): Make your server unique. This can be done by downloaded plugins and using them in an order that no other server has done before. Call it something unique like "Hardcore Player Hunting" for example. Make sure when you list your server on a voting website that you include this tag in your server description so it ticks players curiosity.

- (Ranks): Players enjoy obtaining ranks. This can be done by donating or by setting up a system where players acquire new ranks when they get a certain number of player kills. If you go the donation route, many players might not like the idea and just simply quit, but if you're server is fun, the ones who do stick around will eventually donate if they find the server worthy. However, by acquiring ranks, all players have an equal chance of earning ranks and it's fun! Also, if you want donations, you can sell permissions for actual money (This can be troublesome at times though). If making the players happy is what you wish, I would advise going with players ranking up by pvping.

- (Advertising): This is the most effective strategy of getting new players on your server. However, it can be quiet expensive at times. If you could find low cost advertising then that would be the way to go. And as you build up donation money, you could use it to buy better, more expensive advertising. Facebook and Twitter, I found, aren't very helpful but if you think otherwise then go ahead and try them.

- (Be persistent): It's easy to get sad when players aren't on your server playing, but if you follow these tips, there's a chance for your server to be successful. Just don't give up and listen to the players. Be professional too, that is a plus!

If you found this helpful, consider subscribing to me on pmc, and following me on twitter. You'll have a chance to get your server blogged or tweeted about !

Well posted, I suggest you follow his idea's. One thing I can add, is make a banner for yourself. Make sure it states the IP and name of your server with what is included in the server. Then post actively, people will see it, and join.
