I've started a new survival world, and I literally put down some seeds near a pond (one block away), and though they are growing a bit, it's taken 6 days to get to the 3rd step (minecraft days). Is there any other necessary material to get wheat to grow faster?
(Also, bone meal isn't an option just yet.)

Make sure there is enough light, so use a torch near it. Make sure also that there isn't anything 1 block above it. It may not slow it down having a block above it, but in my experience it does.
