Why are blocks collapsing?

I was playing Minecraft yesterday on the King's Landing map and I noticed that there were many holes in the ground. I started patching them with cobblestone and then many more blocks suddenly fell, sand and gravel and the holes kept getting deeper and deeper. It's been driving me crazy! They are collapsing for no reason! Yesterday was the first day it started doing this.

You sure that thats not a feature of the map? I've seen a couple command blocks able to do that before in a zombie survival minigame.
