Why can't I join a server?

I've been having a problem with logging into minecraft servers. Whenever I try to log in, the logging in screen pops up, and it won't go away, I wait for an hour or so, and then it just goes back to my servers menu. Can someone please help me with fixing this problem? I would appreciate it very much! Thanks!

You might be trying to connect to a 1.6.4 server whilst using 1.7.2.
You can either wait for the server to update, or create a new profile for 1.6.4. To do the latter, click 'New profile' in the bottom-left corner of the launcher, give it a name (e.g. 1.6.4), and select 'release 1.6.4' from the 'Use version' dropdown box. Click 'Save profile', then select the new profile from the dropdown box and click the 'Play' button.

My advice for you is to, goto (WINDOWS>Run>%appdata%>.Minecraft)
and delete the whole .Minecraft folder. After this is done delete the Minecraft.exe application/program. Then find your way to this page http://www.minecraft.net/download
After, you download Minecraft.exe, Run it, After the latest update completes downloading, push {PLAY}, Find the Version of Minecraft/Servers you need try to Enter the Ip adress. If it dosent connect... try to Directly Connect. If neither work then I guees I cant help buddy! Sorry
