Are you trying to join 1.8 servers? Because not many servers even have 1.9.5 up and running in the first place. Either buy the actual game in 1.8 or find 1.9.5 servers.

If you don't have an account then obviously you can't SMP...
are you even on 1.9.5? some people try to connect with just 1.8 -.- and that might be your problemo
