I was looking around for a new server to raid on when the last server I was on shut down. When looking through the listings, every raiding server that was there also had FACTIONS. My experience with factions is losing my entire base + all of my items because the biggest faction typed in a command. What is the appeal of factions for raid servers? You cannot open chests in a faction protected area, which is the core function of "raids".
Also, anyone aware of a raid server with no factions that has 5-30 online players usually?

It's just hard to tell what servers allow chests to be opened in faction land. I'll try yours.
It all depends on the server that is running factions and how they use it. Factions as a base plugin is easily abused, which why you should play on a server that knows the limitations and effects of the plugin as well as how to config it.
So when you get on a server and are killed by super diamond people or are griefed, that is the fault of how the owner(s) configured the server. It could also be that the admins/mods are really balanced as sell a server as "Pay to Win" so the people who actually donate get access to full diamond everything with super enchants, which isn't a very good approach to getting new players.
The way I use factions is to make it so players can't break blocks in faction territory, but then be able to open chests and wooden doors, so you have to design your base to keep them out (also I had explosions on, so you would have to design a base to be resistant to tnt cannons and creeper herding!) Also, I added a economic cost to creating factions as well as declaring war. The map also doesn't show neutral factions, only enemy and allies, so you can essentially hide your base. One thing, however, is letting people use dynmap as an attack catalog since people allow it to show faction claims, which is just dumb to degree that there has to be fog of war.
Factionsplus also adds some awesome features to factions that allows for increased control over power loss, for example players can get deducted more power for suicide than for pvp deaths so there's less incentive to lava suicide.

Most faction servers I see end up having one faction with 12+ players that is impossible to pass so they can take all of your land >.<
People stick to what they know. . .
I use factions but there was a plugin I saw called Guilds I was thinking about using. A lot of people get annoyed with factions on my server as I use set factions, as in I have one non PvP faction and two warring PVP factions, each run by a mod, and players can just join them. I prefer this way to everybody being able to create factions and there ending up being hundreds which just get abandoned.
However I like the way they create PvP in groups. It also grows the community when there are set factions. My server is also an RPG server so the factions are named Norse, Greek etc. Each faction has a theme and it's something I enjoy having on my server.

Not a fan of tekkit, or else I would have been interested. Another issue I found was having too many/unlimited locked chests. I don't mind 1-2 locked chests, but unlimited is lame.
I did create A different type of pvp server called "Teams" Which wasn't so popular. But now I'm creating a tekkit towny server.
I don't know why the factions plugin is so popular. Anytime I go onto a factions server, I am always killed the minute I get on by some jerk with a full set of diamond tools and armor. The factons plugin also creates tons of griefing problems. The one time I actually survived on a factions server, I left my house for a few minutes, and when I came back, my entire house was destroyed! All that was left of it was a sign that said 'get off the server you f*****g noob!'
