Why is my FPS so bad despite specs?
Hello, so i have a really strange issue. My minecraft experiences around 15 - 20 fps which is kind of strange since i run GTA V on highest graphics with a solid 60 fps, or mainly any game you find in the market my PC runs fine, aside from Minecraft.

The 970 is cheaper, but not faster.
No, I'm pretty sure the 970 is faster...
Edit: sorry. Looked at it. The 780Ti is maybe about 10% better, but I'm pretty sure the price point and TDP of the 970 makes up for it...
My laptop can run around 90 FPS on Minecraft, runs other games smoothly (e.g. Assassins creed II, Skyrim, CS:GO) but lags for a high end game like Assassins Creed IV Black Flag on normal settings, if I turn the settings to the min it only lags a bit, but you can run GTA V perfectly so I don't know the issue with MC.. have you tried reinstalling Java/Minecraft e.t.c?

Are YOU joking? Please, the 980 kills the 780. The 780 is maybe even to a 970.
I might have been thinking of the 780Ti
The 970 beats a 780Ti and it is cheaper and faster.
You know what that means with a 980.

Well minecraft does have a bit of code that limits the amount of data your computer is using to run it which is fine for a non-modded short period of playing minecraft (that is with a moderately good computer) but I know from experience that you probably would want to alter it if you desire to install anything like mods or really even run the game for a while.
This can actually be done right in the launcher all you have to do is make a profile enter the Profile editor screen and under the header labelled "Java settings advanced" check the box labeled "JVM Arguments" and enter a few lines of appropriate code
be careful though entering the wrong code will make it so minecraft doesn't run
oh and sorry I can't find an example for you just remember that it may not necessarily be your computer.

Allocating more RAM won't help unless you only have like 128mb allocated in the first place
well yes should have mentioned that one should have at least three gigabytes for things to run smoothly (That's at least what I have and it works like a charm for me)
At max allocate 1GB because more than that (based on how much RAM you have) will make Minecraft hog resources that it isn't using, making it slower in general.

Actually their is no real answer to this question that will help you but to be honest in short even with other games running at 60FPS and stuff, Minecraft is a hog on your PC so you're gonna need a monster computer to run it smoothly and with great frame rates. The other answer judging by your specs is that you're gonna need a better graphics card. The one you're currently using is good for other games but not for power hogs like Minecraft, so you're gonna need to get like a Nvidea GTX 980 and boost your RAM to at least 16 to get the most from your game.
Hope this helps
Are you joking? Don't give bad advise please. The 780 has similar performance to the 980. My 760 gets ~500 fps. Minecraft is not a hog, the problem is that most people play it on -poo- computers so they claim it's a hog. Minecraft only uses 1-2gb of ram normally so where did you get 16gb from?

Please, no. There is a real answer, he may have more than a 60Hz monitor, Minecraft is one of the weakest most least resource intensive games right now, you ARENT going to need a "monster" computer to run it smoothly, he doesn't need a better graphics card, his is fine. "Good for Minecraft" when everything can run it. Minecraft isn't a power hog and you don't need a 980 to run it. I can run it at 300 FPS with integrated. Minecraft will at least take 2GB RAM to play.

I'm running minecraft on a laptop with an intel graphics card that is 2 years out of date. I run 60fps :I derp
OP, can you send screenshots of the settings, f3 diagnostics, and JVM arguments.
Turn off vsync and get optifine. Even if you have a good computer, optifine seems to make everything run much smoother.
Tweak settings in the options menu?...
I have a crappy computer and I don't think it's a powerhog. If anything it's one of the lighter things I run...

I have a 4 GB RAM computer with Intel Inside graphics, I run with shaders and a couple of mods, I run at 20 frames then, if that is all the frames you get, try putting unlimited frames with no vsync, and look at youtube vids about how to get max frames on minecraft, if that doesnt work your graphics card is a scam
I shouldn't need any "max frames" things to get over 300 fps at all times, and i bought this GPU from one of the largest technology stores in my country. I really really don't think they would sell a scam of a gpu. It's not under 60 all the time, but it goes down even at the slightest of action, fire for example or 1 tnt will bring it down to like 30fps.
As mentioned it works fine in GTA V, Civ V, Europa Universalis 4, Skyrim, Need For Speed Rivals, or literally any other heavy game you throw at it. The one game i can't play properly in Minecraft

In my MC F3 it does say that i run Java 1.8.0 64 Bit
Mem use: 30%
Allocated 1GB
CPU Intel Core I5-4670k CPU @ 3.4GHZ
Geforce GTX 780/PCIE/SSE2
I can't really find any issues, the only thing it literally could be is some weird virus. Now i don't own my Windows 8.1 Disc anymore, so i can't reset my PC

Maybe allocate 2GB of RAM? Might help a little
Is Minecraft's "Max Framerate" set to something higher then 60?
Make sure VSync is off.
Have you tried reinstalling Java?
Try downloading the launcher that doesn't have the java that comes with it.

Tried all of those, nothing really makes it better.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this. You are more than likely running off of the integrated graphics with that processor. I don't know how to do it but you need to switch the graphics to run off of the card.

What?!?
My build is literally identical to this. Minecraft is in no way a power hog. I usually get 300-500 fps max settings, and 8,000-12,000 fps on minimum settings. This build is WAY more than enough. The 780 was top of the line last year and is still a really great GPU. It's probably some software issue.

I have a 7 year old pc, wich runs mc with more than 100fps, and my new laptop doesnt even hit 30. Its strange how java/mc runs sometime.
Is your HardDrive SSD?
Maybe try updating your graphic drivers? As posted above, it could be someting like that. Altough i doubt it. Also giving your MC too much ram will make it lag even more as there will be not enough space for other things to run. So if you have 8Gigs allocate a max of 5-6Gb

I have allocated so it uses around 30% ram at all times, drivers are up to date, java is up to date, Not really anything that would make my performance as bad as it is.
try installing Optifine, there are tutorials on youtube. Optifine helps boost your FPS and has settings that should help with it. if your still having trouble put your maximum frame rate on unlimited and look at some tutorials on youtube to get the best settings
Optifine wont help the issue, with the specs op has they should be able to get 100 fps without it easily
[deleted]
I'll try there, tested drivers and java already.
