check your firewalls i had this and McAfee was blocking minecraft despite i have told it about 500 times to not block minecraft

this happened to me before, I left it a couple of days and it was fine
well both should work, so it's either your antivirus, or your internet proxy thingies
he said he's using the original minecraft, the pre 1.5 one, it's probably unsupported or something.
maybe... or he meant that he isn't using any mods

This is a possible solution. If it's not working after that, it might be your firewall or anti-virus (MCafee is known for it) blocking the downloads

Try redownloading the launcher; yours may be corrupt or non-functional.
Can you rightclick minecraft.exe and run it as administrator?
If not, who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider ex. comcast, centurylink, etc.)

Maybe one of your files in your Minecraf.jar folder got deleted. Anyways i suggested deleting Minecraft and re-installing it
