Is making a java server free

It is 100% free.

There are two ways to do it.
1. Use a free hosting service like Minehut
2. Buy a server or use an old computer and set it up as a Minecraft server.

It's not too bad. I can get it to 3 steps.



1) Get the server jar from the minecraft site.

2) Port forward your router
3) If you have a custom domain, setup the dns settings in your domain settings

There are a few options for creating a MC server on Java.

1. You can set up your own (Noxcrew | How to set up a Java Server)
2. You can sign up for mc realms (subscription based)
3. You can find a third-party server hosting thingy. (usually subscription but there are some free ones out there.)

You can, however, get a free trial server at https://server.pro/create which is nice, but can't really sustain more than 2 people.

If you want a free server, you have two options:

• You can host it yourself, but it's difficult to use any other programs on the computer that's hosting the server. In addition, you won't have a domain name (like hypixel.net), so anyone connecting would need to know your IP address (something in the format of 123.456.789.10:25565).
• However, free server hosts do exist (as others have said), such as https://minehut.com and https://aternos.org. However, these don't work very well for an always-on server because the servers on these platforms stop after a while and are fairly laggy. These hosts do provide the computer and domain name for free however.
  

So it's really up to you and what you want from your server. If it's an SMP server for your friends and family, a self-hosted one will probably work. But if you want to do a server that strangers will (hopefully) connect to and play, using someone else's server hosting will work. However, if you want to make a server that strangers will play on, it's probably best to just use a paid server host like https://mcprohosting.com/ or https://scalacube.com/ (i have not used either of these so look around and find your own if you like)
