Request: Diamond Shards

Hi! Currently using a few datapacks (namely Tool Progression and CC's Stone Age) which really help stretch out the early game and make it feel like real survival. A request I have in order to keep this theme going, is to revamp the way diamond works to make it feel super rare and valuable again, which in turn makes Netherite seem even more end-game.

1) Diamond ore drops itself instead of diamonds, much like iron and gold ores do.

2) Smelting diamond ore in a furnace gets you only stone, but smelting in a blast furnace gets you...

3) ...diamond shards! The equivalent of iron or gold nuggets.

4) Crafting together nine diamond shards gets you one diamond.

I think this would make the grindy survival feel of the game feel much more present, instead of making it so that you're basically immortal once you find your first diamond vein.

Anyone think they can help make this a reality?

That would be wonderful! Thank you for the offer to help. I have a texture already made for the shards if that helps.

yes, please do send me the texture you have. Two questions, what version of Minecraft do you want this to be made for? and how long to smelt diamond into stone and shards?

also to let you know datapacks are powerful but they can only do so much, the main problem is that in custom recipes you cant add NBT data which is required to "Make" a new item, but there are ways around this. I can think of three that I would try.

  1. use a smithing table to "combined" diamond ore with a fuel (smithing table is currently the only way to add NBT into recipes)
  2. using a dropper and some command shinanigans to replace diamond ore and a fuel with shards
  3. smelting the ore in the blast furnace(it will appear as an ingame item like an actual diamond) then swapping the place holder with a shard when the player takes the items out.

Sent you a link to the file. The version can be for 1.16.1; the smelting time doesn't matter, but I guess the same as iron ore.

As far as the method, you could go for whatever seems easiest for you, I wanted to make a request and not a burden. Ideally the smelting option sounds closest to the ideal, but no need to stress if another one is more feasible.

I have been working on the pack when I have time and I am almost done, I have everything working except for two bugs.

1. Diamond ore drops itself but when mined it gives xp so infinit xp anyone? I'm looking into how to stop this.
2. Grabbing the shard out of the blast furnace is buged but I think I have a workaround.

why do so many people like grindiness? its not fun, it makes no sense why anyone would want more of it.

To each his own; we all enjoy different aspects of the game and for different reasons. I personally like the intrinsic feel of a humble beginning, where climbing each next step of progression is a real triumph. It makes survival feel higher-risk, and as such makes building and thriving in a survival world feel like an accomplishment.

Super do-able, but you'd have to require a texture pack and some NBT crafting for it to work. A much easier way to make diamonds rarer might be to just lower the amount of diamond ores in veins to 1 or 2 in the minecraft/worldgen folder.
