I think server owners need to look at different mainstream plugins to be successful. It gets boring if everyone does the same old plugin combo.
I have never made a server without Essentials, CoreProtect, and PermissionsEx.
You MUST have World Guard!!! It is one of the best plugins to stop griefers and it also has so many more cool features!!!
Every server I've ever owned has had Essentials, CoreProtect, WorldEdit, GroupManager, and ClearLag, at the very least... They're all, in my opinion, quite essential for server management, although GroupManager could be switched out for a different permissions plugin if you so choose.
I also recommend essentials, it has lots of useful commands
