Easy guide to server prep?

Hey. This is my second time starting a server, and there's always the one problem I've faced. Simply speaking, finding those sites that you want/need to work with. So how hard, and how beneficial would it be to make a forum or webpage that not only links to, but offers some of the necessities based on your server needs? Does this exist? Who would back me up or support me on this idea if it doesn't?
