How do I get my server recognized?
I've posted it on all the Minecraft server advertising websites I could find, I can't make a banner..

That's just sad.
I'd recommend some of the tips Skruble (xTyuzi) gave me.
You should start off by finish your server 100%.
You MUST have votifier and a listener installed, so you can rank up on server lists.
You should also post your server on the top 8 server lists, to maake sure people will notice you.
Now, for what you have to do with the server ingame:
1. Have a good & original spawn
2. Have good & active staff
3. If you're running a factions server, I'd recommend you to start out slightly OP.
4. Host events & DP's often. (Not too often though).
5. Give good rewards when people vote
6. Server must be feature-rich, but also lagfree and 24/7
7. Be patient. It can take up to a year (or even more) to get a playerbase like the most popular servers have.
Most of these tips are from me though, as Skruble were the one that suggested OP at the start & good voting rewards.

I have the similar problem and the same problem.
similar: a blog hit the pop reel about how to install a mod in two hours, and the guy who uploaded it is a level 7 with 6 subscribers, and i'm a level 2 with 11 subscribers. however, about a month ago, i had made a blog on the same topic with nearly the same instructions. Now, I'm banned from commenting and flagging because I uploaded a blocky skin and its ''not original enough.'' so i was gonna flag it but nooo I'm just not original enough. so now he's getting all the attention and who's getting none? Me.
Same: Well, it's not the same, but it's advice. you can get popular by making server reviews about it I'll even advertise it for you! does it have a complicated ip like 2354.24.3453.283 and that stuff (the ip is random numbers and it's not real) if it does, you might wanna make it something like mc.fakeipnotreal.net or something like that (notice my ip mc. fake ip not real . net) but make it shorter. I've never owned a server but good luck!

Constant advertising.
Putting it on a server listing website and leaving it gets you a few people, but when you put it in your signature, are active in the community (regardless of the site you are on), and advertise often where appropriate, you get a lot more people.

I guess they are just popular on youtube or they pay to advertise a lot or just are interesting.
