Lag problems
Recently I've been trying to play Minecraft with a friend of mine that lives in Canada. I live much farther south, so we can't exactly get together and play over LAN, and since neither of us can host a server, we only get to play when we go on public servers or when another friend is hosting. However, whenever we go on public servers, he lags like crazy. His character stays in one place but he is still moving. The animation for punching stays with the character, so I can be 10 blocks away looking at his "shadow", and he comes up behind me and punches me, even though nobody can actually see him, and I see the punching animation and take damage although he appears to be far away. Whenever I punch the shadow, he takes damage. We were trying to play yesterday and I suggested he delete his .minecraft folder and redownload everything from scratch, but he ended up with the same problems. Does anybody know how to fix this?
Thanks!

Does he "lag" in single player or only multiplayer? Could it be his PC spec, connection or video settings? Has he tried installing OptiFine to see if that improves anything?
It appears to only lag in multiplayer. He has OptiFine installed, but it doesn't make much difference because it's not fps lag, rather, it's a weird bug where he stays in one place on other people's screens while he can still move around and punch people but not open chests.
Somebody else suggested it could be a connection problem. I'll ask him when he gets back from school, which should be in a few hours.

Where are the servers you're trying to play on located? Do you also lag on these servers or just him?
They're all hosted in North America as far as I know. We've tried on US and Canadian servers. It seems to be only him that lags because I haven't had any of the same issues, he was able to see me just fine.
It appears to be his connection to the server and his connection to his router, it has nothing to do with his minecraft files so deleting the .minecraft file would be a waste of time, have him run a internet speed test and see if he's using any proxys.
I'll suggest that to him. How do you check for proxies?
So far it's been on every server we tried except for the private servers hosted by our other friend. We tried servers hosted in Canada and still had problems, as well as servers hosted in the US.
Question; Is it only on a certain server, or on all the servers you go on?
