If I remember correctly, a log will prevent your leaves from decaying within a 4 blocks radius.

SpartanSkeletonthe leaves must be connected to a log of the same type, example: oak leaves with oak logs

This was removed a while ago. Placed leaves don't decay, but natural ones do.

This is because "user placed" leaves, regular leaves, and decaying leaves all have a different metadata value.

So the best option would be to give the leaves the metadata of non-decaying leaves.

I once played on a server that had a "huge blocks" world. Gigantic trees, looked really cool, but as soon as they received a chunk update the leaves started decaying.

EDIT: Nevermind. They have to be PLACED. Yes, SpartanSkeleton is correct. If you're world-painting from a 3rd party program, then you need the logs.
