I feel that the new RPG aspects he is adding is the way to go.
1. It doesn't take away from the creative side
2. It makes the game much more replayable
3. It allows server owners more flexibility
And I am sure that there will be a block update, and besides they are already adding carpets, colored clay, hay, and more into 1.6.

i agree absolutely with you all but does anyone else appreciate block introductions?
RPG... Potions don't make it an RPG. More tools for mapmakers doesn't make it an RPG. Villager trading, which isn't even like the trading in any RPGS, doesn't make it an RPG. It's still that sandbox survival game it's always been, they're just trying to add things for every kind of player -- Mapmakers, redstoners, casual players, builders. . . No, it's not an RPG. Not at all. Do you even know what an RPG is? Actually, now that I think about it Minecraft is a sandbox game, although with plugins and mods and that type of stuff you can technically make it whatever you want it to be.
@31iwin
Why thank you, sir although I normally would agree that change is the reason why people stay with things.

Look, I sat down yesterday and decided to play on the snapshot, single player.
Crank up the music volume and let the mellow MC tunes play. It feels nothing like an RPG. Or any PVP RAIDING FACTIONS MMO like people think it is turning into.
It felt very much like the ''old days''
Nothing much have changed. People say the new Redstone stuff ruined it, I never once crafted any of that, influenced me nothing.
People say the Witches and bats ruined it, I found a hut, the impact or influence was so small it was ''I don't even care''.
People say the horses and new stuff ruined it, people have WANTED, PLEADED, BEGGED Mojang for years to release horses, what do you do? Complain -_-

Jeb fucked it up bad mate. Real bad.
Nope.
Minecraft is anything, since you could make it into almost anything.
Whatever Minecraft is becoming, I don't care. It's better that they keep updating it. If they stopped updating in Beta, barely anyone would still play it.
Been playing since squids came out. (Props to anyone who knows what update that was without googling it) And might I mention, I would most defiantly still play it. It's not the fact that there wasn't PvP or really multiplayer, to me it was the control factor; you're placed on your own planet and you shape it as you see fit. Like legos, but virtual. Which, for myself, made the game awesome, and really, makes any game great.
What I'm saying is if they don't keep updating it, Minecraft will become unused eventually, rather than if they don't.
In my comparison, I compared minecraft to legos; were legos ever updated? How many people still use them? In my own opinion, I would say it's one of the game platforms that need not be updated; the very fact that it is what you want it to be can support itself more than enough.
You make a good point.
I agree with Charliecho. Due to the creative/sandbox mode and the fact you can do so much with it means that just about anything is possible. However I do not think that user created maps would count as making 'Minecraft' an RPG (or any other genre for that matter). The game itself "Minecraft" is not 'made' any genre due to custom maps being made for it.
There are three main aspects to game Minecraft.
Creative is just that; you can play about with everything to see how it all the things work and there is so much to do that it would be difficult for many to get bored. Plus you can create your own worlds/games for other people to play in. Creative mode is not RPG though.
Secondly you can play the adventure mode and while this contains RPG elements (as do many other games that are not classed as RPG) it can not be classed as an RPG. I would say that adventure mode is again, just that; adventure. Just like, say, Zelda is not really an RPG but instead an action/adventure game with a large amount of RPG elements. I guess what I am saying is, are you confused to what an RPG actually is and not mixing it up with an action/adventure game?
Thirdly, you can play users custom maps which in themselves can be many different genres (but see first note) but I think Minecraft is too limited/tedious to be able to make a true RPG custom map. I guess it is possible but would be a crazy task to achieve in terms of mechanics required and time needed. I know it is sandbox but you still only have a limited amount of things to tinker with.
I certainly agree that things added to the game over time have also added RPG elements to the game but not to the point where it could be considered as an actual RPG.
That is what I think anyway.

I don't think it's turning into anything in particular. Minecraft is Minecraft, and Minecraft is a unique game in itself. Just about anything is possible (with the use of mods, plugins, custom maps, etc.) so Minecraft is what you make of it. If you want to play RPG on Minecraft, find and join a server or download and install an adventure map. If you want to play something creative, play Minecraft in creative, if you want to play basic survival, play Minecraft in survival. Whether you're playing single player or multi player, Minecraft will always be, Minecraft.
*claps*
*standing ovation since I didn't give props to it earlier*
I agree. Minecraft can be used as an educational tool too. Just look on YouTube.
Well said.
I think it's a more of everything game. Even if it does turn RPG, as you said so let it. It is whatever the gamers what it to be.
I agree but the reason i started to play minecraft was the creative aspect of the game. Not to say that the fighting aspect wasn't good im not saying that im saying block introduction is what i get excited about ya know i completely understand where you guys are coming from as well.
If you like the creative aspect of the game, then just stay in creative mode, and build stuff! They have added new things to the game t make it appeal to more people and have more infinite and renewable playing value, not to distract from the creativity of the game. You choose what you do in minecraft.
Its becoming more of a game where people design what you play. Its starting to lose focus on survival and looking at custom maps, which, tend to be in the fantasy style. It isn't very much like an rpg. You can choose how you progress, but that's it. They are moving towards create things for the community. Make us popular. Not rpg nor survival.
That's what it was intended to be.
True that.
