So everytime i seem to go down into my mine and find iron, gold, diamond, etc. I seem to always fall into a pit of LAVA! Just recently for the second time in a row i fell into a lava pit with a full stack of iron, 20 gold, and 6 diamonds, with also about 2 stacks of coal. boy oh boy do i love minecraft...

Don't big directly down, don't dig directly up and when you find something good, STORE IT! Checkpoints (usually just a chest with goodies and ores, a crafting table and a furnace) spread throughout an extensive mine system is good. It helps you navigate and store your items easily. Also gives you a refuge from creepers.
