Is it just a bad game or did they do it in a simplistic style on purpose.

If you're talking about the textures, then you gotta thank Notch for the simplicity in it. Luckily in the 1.14 update, new textures with a tad more detail.
If you're talking about the basic premise of the game being bad... Well you make your own story in Minecraft so if you want to build, then you build. Want to explore, then explorer. Want to PvP, then PvP. It's only really your fantasy that sets the limits in Minecraft, and sure it has a few limits, but why let that stop you? Find a way around it :p
