Minecraft Java Servers Blocking VPNs?laptop_mac

I've been using a VPN for internet security reasons (work, internet privacy) for the last two or three years and I've only recently come across a few Minecraft servers that have blocked my VPN?

I get an error mesage saying that I've been kicked and will need to disable my VPN in order to play on the server? At which point I remove the server from my list.

Is this a setting that each individual server has or is it the particular VPN I'm using? I'm using ExpressVPN.

It's maybe from the risk, that hackers/cheaters will come back while they are ip banned

It's a setting.

Servers that block your VPN are doing that because, well, say someone uses hacks on Hypixel and they get caught. If they have alts, they could come back on those.. which would cause an IP ban, I would assume. But if they have multiple and a VPN, then they would be able to bypass the bans and get right back to hacking. Unless Hypixel blocks VPNs (which they do). This protects the server from people like that. Although, how they figure out that you're using a VPN, I don't know

its a particular setting in the server properties file.
i usually have that setting enabled just due to the fact that people that dont like rules and tend to break the rules or bypass bans use them.

think of blocking vpns as another layer of pseudo security for server

Interesting, thank you for the information.

Second this.

If you ban a player and they have alts, then often they switch to a new IP & alt. So this makes it easier to track people trying to negate bans and IP bans. At least this way you make it that little more difficult anyway.

I see zero advantage using a VPN to play mc, if anything surely your ping is just gonna be worse? I mean its a game, a perfectly legal one at that, so why should you need to hide your IP address?

Sure yeah if Minecraft is banned on your network then it will bypass any filters, but which ISPs are going to filter out Minecraft traffic? Few I'm sure. And as far as data mining is concerned, I doubt which Minecraft servers you play on is of any interest to anyone snooping, be it government institutions or your ISP, in any case you have just given all that data to your VPN provider anyway.

Why do you use a VPN for mc....?

Doesn't really answer why, I was just curious is all. :)

You are probably going to encounter this sort of annoyance more and more. I have worked on a few, relatively medium scale, but high value ecommerse website projects recently; where implementing VPN detection and blocking in an effort to help negate bank transaction fraud was in the spec. With more people moving to VPN's I can see a lot of the big boys going down that route, if not for fraud detection, but if the data mines start to dry up.

Don't take this personally, but I would say if you are that worried about the internet that you need a VPN to play mc then I think its time for you to disconnect. With the way the world is going at the moment; tracking, surveillance, digital IDs & passports, QR codes... etc, and with all the effects of this technology on our physical and mental health, I am beginning to think I am done here. I have been getting more and more tempted to sack in my 15 years working in IT, smash up my phone, and sell all my hardware. Start living like a full time Luddite. (You probably think I'm joking.)

It's ok, don't worry - I wasn't offended by your comment haha

I'm not saying I need a VPN for Minecraft in particular, I'm saying I think it's weird that some Minecraft servers block VPNs and I didn't understandy why.

I work in IT as well and I agree to to a certain point.
