That would be update 1.6, of which is mostly bug fixes and the map item. Minecraft is currently in 1.5_02 for some horrible bugs that were introduced in 1.5 and 1.5_01, though i think that there is no version number listing for 1.5_02 for most people. I do not think that writable books will be added to the game any time soon. This update is not going to come out any time in the next few weeks however because of the number of bugfixes that need to be made. Source: Notch's Tumblr
