How do mods work im confused can someone tell me

mods are fan-written pieces of software that change the way that Minecraft "plays" by adding content, modifying play style, whatever.
Most mods require that you alter the actual program (minecraft.jar) by adding files to it. If you're not terribly computer-savvy, this can be a major issue. If you download a mod and want to try it, make sure the modder included an installation instruction step-by-step. Some of the mods that are used a lot (like modloader) will actually have step-by-step youtube videos on how to install. That's a great place to start.
