1.8 Pre release 2! Doesn't work on Windows 7 D:
The title says it, dang it! I guess I'll have to go on 1.8 Pre 1 untill 1.8 Pre 3 or the actual 1.8 comes out

if its like freezing at the update screen i can tell u what to do, instead of naming the 1.8 whatever u name it, name it minecraft18
then when u put it in the folder that ur suppose to put it in, rename it while it is in the folder back to minecraft and it willwork, it must be like some weird glitch

Don't stress out too much, It's not THAT big of a deal. The leaked version has many, many bugs. It also lowers your framerate. (Say you had 100+FPS in 1.7.3, Now you have 20FPS) Hopefully, Notch will make it less laggy. Just wait.

I, too, have Windows 7 x64. I'm not having any troubles.
You may have installed the .jar wrong. Only thing I can see going wrong here.
Other than that, I'd say do a force update, get the new .jar, and replace just the older minecraft.jar (and not any other .jar)

Update your java to newest version. Try a clean re-install.
We cant help without more information about what happens and why it isn't working.

I have solved this problem.
1. Replace the minecraft.jar in your bin folder (go to : C:\User\insertuserhere\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin) and replace the minecraft.jar currently in there with the 1.8 Pre-release minecraft.jar.
2. Make sure that when you put in the 1.8 minecraft.jar that you call it minecraft.
3. Then run the game in offline mode! Voila! You can play
