Netherrack. It catches fire, so you don't need to mine for coal(torches).
And the SlowSand is nice to make a primary defense with.

There are lots of things important in nether
1. Killing the Blaze to get blaze rods
2. You can kill wither skeletons (Black skeletons) and get their head to make a 3 headed wither skeleton.
3. You can get the Nether Warts which are use-ful for potions!
When it comes to finding stronghold:
1. You must craft a Ender Eye by killing an enderman and collect it's pearl and killing a blaze and getting it's rod and crafting it.
2. You throw it randomly, it will show you the direction.
3. When it starts making wierd movements and goes straight down, it means the strong hold is there, so you dig straight down (make sure not to break those cracky blocks or you'll get attacked by Silverfish.
