Im disgusted with how this game is now.
I havent played in like a year and i come back and all ive seen so far is children who are soooo power hungry.
This is what all of the servers consist of.
1 Owner who has no clue what hes doing.
10 staff members who got their rank from filling out an application filled with lies.
0 dedicated players because the server sucks.
Nothing fun to do.
Crappy builds
Crappy plugins
Ugly chat and rank colors
Etc.
9/10 of the servers ive joined i have tried to tell these owners what is wrong with their server so maybe they can fix it, All i get in return is their little slave staff members yelling at me so im yelling back and 2 seconds later im banned forever. No warning, No mute, Nothing. Just banned

This community has been overrun by 9 year olds and sadly its become too much for me so ill see all you big boys in CS:GO <3

Prehaps you should join http://www.planetminecraft.com/server/cubed-creative/. It's full of banter, fantastic Modern, Traditional, Fantasy. The Westpoint city is there as well, so you can see all the builds Aequotis posted, I posted, etc.

Why not try and FIND good servers that match your taste? And about creating NEW gamodes or something unique, that is hard without inspiration. A lot of ideas can just randomly spawn up at any time, so just be on the lookout. As for some of us that create a faction/survival/modded in any way server, like myself, we do not have the skill in java to really implement what we want in a server. Yes, we can ask some devs or coders looking into it, but we risk the chance of a bad coder doing something horrible to your server.

Look, I know you want to find a good server, but all I can say is try my server, or try other peoples servers until you find the server for you. No, mine is nothing too special because it is a factions server, but that is because I like factions. It has been my favorite gamemode since forever and I am sad that there aren't that many good faction servers. But mine is not perfect, but it is mine, and I am proud of it.

PS: I know you think all server owners are power hungry 9 year olds, but I would like to inform, there are server owners like me, I am 23, humble, nice, and treat all players fairly and nicely (unless they are in need of banishment).

As a server owner, I have multiple opinions on this.
My first and primary opinion is, well, if you want something added, ask for it on our servers forum, as we have a dedicated recommendations sub-forum.
It annoys me when people get on, complain about something (and no detail as to why they are complaining), and leave.
Yet, I do appreciate when people do this, because they noticed that as soon as they joined the server, if something is making players not want to stay on long, that needs to be urgently fixed.
Submitting a forum post is way better as the entire community can comment on the same subject, both old and new players, which should always be kept in mind.

My staff are also trained to handle this, other (lower quality) servers tend to have staff who are not educated, and just tell someone talk to the owner when faced with a question that may be difficult to answer, that is not the point of having staff.
Instead I have my staff follow this protocol for when people begin complaining about something, imagine this being the In-Game chat:
Click to reveal
A | NewGuy > Is the owner on?
Y | Moderator [Mod]> Not right now, is there something I can do to help?
A | NewGuy > idk if you can fix this but the enchant tokens are too slow and needs to be fixed or people wont have fun
Y | Moderator [Mod]> Well I cant do much to fix that, but you could submit a post on our forums regarding this! Go to http://planetminecraft.com
A | NewGuy > i dont want to tho
Y | Moderator [Mod]> Well that would probably be the best way to get the owners attention on that issue, or you can talk directly with him when he is online.
A | NewGuy > k

See, most other staff who may be lazy, or just arent in the mood to deal with that, would just ban or mute that person for trolling.

Oh btw this is my first wall of text on PMC.

Trying to tell owners how to run their server is a pretty bad move in itself. The owner pays for the server, they don't want some little kid that makes rants on the forums telling them how to run their show

While so many nine year olds make trashy servers you make trashy forum posts... See a resemblance?
It seems like you looked for a reason to show off when you saod "See you big boys at CS:GO."
I have only heard the expression "Big Boys" from women flirting in movies and parents babying their 4-8 year olds.
You should probably think a little bit before you post something that shows you have a lower maturity and intelligence level than the people you criticize.

Oh my god I did not expect this post to get this out of hand, I read like the first 3 replies and got bored, sorry for anyone who had any actual intelligent replies.
No offense to the peoples posts I read, i wasn't talking about you specifically but they're were some comments on here that gave me cancer.
And now that im re reading my post i can see why some of you think im a little butt hurt kid and i would probably reply to my own post with "Go play csgo then loser" but my intentions were a lil less hostile with this post and i apologize for that but this post was more of a in the moment heating rage.
I don't hate minecraft i just don't love the people who play it too much although some tend to be awesome.
I will sometimes come back here and maybe play some factions for fun but until then ill stick to my cs:go and one last thing...I genuinely hope you all enjoy this game and have a great day, even the people who think im a lil kid and want me to drink bleach.

the problem is not that it is hard to find a really great server (there will always be greatness everywhere you look), it is extremely difficult to create and maintain one. these days it seems like everyone is going for the popular servers, and like this posts OP, no longer interested in making friends and working together. small servers owners are only getting smaller, and the owners see hardly anything but noobs trying to ruin servers or older Minecraft players with bad attitudes.

Agree with what specifically? There was no direct reason and or logic behind his entire "counter-claim". His whole post is just an upset comment in response to a lot of people joining and leaving his server instantly because they "didn't like it" and wanted to shrug off the blame onto the one person who blatantly posted about how a lot of servers are bad these days, the OP.

In your defense, I used a lot of hyperbole and rhetoric in my post.

Bottom line, I ban (this is a true, calculated number) 9/10 players who join my server within 2 minutes. (on average). Because 9/10 log in, refuse to take the five steps to read the rule board, refuse to open the guidebook I lovingly crafted, and in short, know nothing about me, or my design philosophy.

Yet, they immediately delve into exactly the same speech the OP stated he made on the server in question.

"Your server is bad, your plugins are bad, your spawn is ugly. I've spent 2 minutes on your server and know nothing about it, nor do you know whether you can trust me. I am not invested in your server in anyway, but let me tell you all the ways it can be fixed." This is usually followed by, "are you looking for staff! I can help you make this server good"

My immediate response is /ban. This player will never be an asset to the community I have built. As a general rule, if this player lasts longer than 2 minutes, he will begin swearing, harrassing staff, and building swastikas" (this is based on 4 years of experience watching these players.)

I also provided a screenshot of a player starting this spiel.

I have provided fact after fact to back up my "counter" as you call it. Server owners who run a server because they enjoy it, and who may even be less skilled builders, plugin managers, and babysitters, than others, are not the problem with the minecraft community. Entitled players, joining server after server, disrespecting the staff, and criticizing the work and time invested...ARE the problem.

Here is a post, I made way back in 2011 that elaborates on this problem

Great discussion so far.

@The guy, who suggested McMMO:
I know this plugin, even when it wasn't popular or to be paid. The general idea behind it is okay, but it doesn't make minecraft more enjoyable (for me at least).
9/10 times I'd rather create my own skills/levels + requirements, then using it.

Don't get me wrong tho. It is a neat plugin, which definetly can provide some extra fun, but people should realize it isn't as simple as to run McMMO and entitle themselves as "RPG Server"

Anyways. I'd like to state my opinion on some points:
- The community makes the server.
This is like 90% true. A server is the more enjoyable, the better the community is. However the staff plays a role aswell. I personally hate it, if people teleport to me, watch over me and always go like "You need help ???" Even if I tell them I don't and ask them to leave, they usually won't

- I ban players, who don't read the rules/Guidebook
Agreeing 100% here. Its utterly pointless to play on the server and ignore all rules. I personally prefer a whitelist, with additional forum and actually force the players to applicate/read the rules.
I know that this can also be done ingame, with a Quiz or some similar verification process, but I highly dislike those trials, as I find them time-consuming.
I'd rather have to solve an IQ-Test, cause alot of players seem unable to even understand the most basic plugins.

- A server can't be perfect for everyone
True. All these multi-server-networks are holding alot of players, because of their variety, although they don't excel in any of them. (Not refering to Minigame Server here, but to City-/Survival-/Freebuild-/Economy Server constructs)
However, I find it very important to listen to what players want.

- People always ask for power
Once more agreeing here. I usually get like 5 ppl a week, who want to "help out", but when I tell them to apply with a written text, most of them send me 3-4lines, thus making me decline politely.

What Cube_nsis said, there are so many people that will criticize just about every part of your server.
If you just bought a server spawn from Blockworks, they will complain about your plugin setup. If you had your entire server custom-coded by a dev-team with the skill and manpower of the hypixel dev teams (ALL OF THEM) they will question either your choices in plugins, your fitness personality-wise to be running a server, or the type of server you chose to start with.

The point here is to just ignore these people. Your server will never be perfect in every way. What you CAN do is make it so it appeals to a specific (preferably large) group of people and just ignore the complainers (or set up your server rules to make it easy to mute/ban them. As long as you shove those rules in their face when they join, they can't call "aboose")

You seem to not be the kind of person who owns a Minecraft server during this era. so let me explain this experience.

with any small or even medium-sized server, whether it be any type, theres always going to be somebody who loves it, somebody who hates it, somebody in the middle. if you put something out that that is near-perfect with high expectations, theres still 5% of everyone who loves it, 5% who hates it, and 90% of people who just kind of check it out and move on.

so, its definitely a trick to not dwell on the positive or negative (like both the op and the reply above). in terms of reading reviews online and things like that, i feel that for my server ive nailed down a super healthy approach at that stuff. i step back and remember at the end of the day, ive just got to do the best job that i know how to do and just be sincere and be honest, try to do the right thing. at the end of the day, people will talk and thats totally cool and us server owners should all just keep fighting the good fight and making our servers as good as possible.

Apologies,

although I appreciate your generous explanation about running a server in this era I fail to see the reason and or relevance in how it applies to my recent post. Asking people to be unbiased is impossible especially on reviews that you've already replied too. If one were to truly become unbiased in a review or "to not dwell on the negatives or positives" said person would not even reply to a rant in the first place.

Based upon your earlier response, you had already agreed with @Cube_nsis. Most likely as you had stated before that you yourself were a server owner and had a slight understanding to the point he was trying to make. So whether or not you "keep fighting the good fight and making our servers as good as possible", (to which that in it of itself is a biased claim saying that you agree with @Cube_nsis) you still haven't answered me specifically on what his logic entails. How do you see his logic and in what ways? Show me what I'm apparently unable to see at the given point in time.

Your answer should be based upon the logic you see in his words.

I want to address a couple of your points, if I may.

1. The term "nothing to do" . Minecraft is a sandbox game. A world with no predefined story line or quest line. At its core, you dig holes, punch trees, and stack legos. We all started playing minecraft because, for whatever reason, this concept appealed to us. Whether it was the opportunity to just zone out for an hour, to express our creativity, or the pure survival concept of it. Perhaps if you stopped looking for "something to do", and tried playing the game, it might refresh your love of the core concept of minecraft.

2. Crappy builds: A minecraft server, a good minecraft server, is NOT defined by it's spawn point. It is defined by the players: the community. My first server spawn....many years ago, consisted of an empty iron sphere that I worldedited half in the ground and called an igloo, a rather large church built out of obsidian that we used to jokingly roleplay in with no ties to the server's theme, and the rest was my player's 5x5 cobblestone huts built around spawn. It looked like the aftermath of a nuclear disaster. However, we averaged 40 to 50 during peak times. Compared to the 2000 player bungie corded hub servers of today that's nothing, but back then, we were proud of our little server. Notice I say we. it wasnt MY server. Without players, a minecraft server is nothing more than a sandbox to test, tinker with. Fact is, my players knew I loved the game as much as they did.

3. Crappy plugins; There are a number of poorly designed, poorly coded plugins out there. There are even more that when used with other plugins create a distinct imbalance, or even bugs in the game. Fact is, you didn't pay last months server bill. you didn't invest the time and effort into those crappy plugins. You didn't sit awake at 4am, staring at a yaml parser for an hour before you found that nasty tab in your file. The server owner did. You don't get to decide what plugins the server uses. When you log into a server. you are a guest, on private property. You DO have the right to decide to stay or leave. However, ...and on to the next point.

4. " tell them what is wrong with their server": By your own admission, you didn't just log in, decide that this particular server wasn't for you, and exercise your right to play elsewhere, did you. You had the gall, to walk into someone else's home, tell them how dirty their floor was, how poorly arranged their furniture was, and then you're surpised when the people the owner of that home trusts asked you to leave.

I had a guy, an hour ago. Logged into my server, which, at the time had one player on, and that player was afk.

included below is a screenshot of this player's conversation with no one in particular

Fact is, that player was NOT the owner, the server IS factions, there is nothing on my server that even remotely points to any sort of prison setup...at all, and frankly, I'm quite happy with my basic spawn that leans more towards functionality than pretty. When this guy didn't have a server owner to interact with, convince that he was so knowledgeable that he had found all of the server's flaws within 1 minute and should be opped in order to fix them, he left. He logged on, did not move from the spawn point, did not run /help, did not open the guidebook I worked so hard on for new players, and then left.

Bottom line is, and this is purely subjective of course,

Server owners who dont need advice from Joe random are not the problem with the minecraft server community. You are.

You are.

I'd say that there is nothing wrong with kids playing minecraft. Iam not a big fan of those minigames myself (well except Master Builders, which I find quite entertaining) and thats why I usually play simple Survival Servers, as they are about the core essence of the game : Creating/Exploring

However, the usual Survival isn't challenging enough, as its just building a plain hut, gather some iron and get the diamonds. At this point it is literally just impossible to die, if you arent a complete moron.
Same goes for hunger. It isn't mandatory at all and you usually suffocate in editable stuff within half a hour of gameplay.

Thats why I once created a server, with increased difficulty in mobs, no diamonds at all and rarely iron/gold, while also adding custom drops. In short it went down a RPG approach. However the resonance of the players was really bad. Alot of them quit, or didn't understand the concept at all.
At some point I gave up and returned to simple Survival and the playerbase increased once more.

By the end of the day, I can only speak from my experience and say, that players don't want a "different" or "harder" minecraft at all. They want simple Minecraft with all its broken mechanics.
And PvP/Minigames are an entirely different matter.

A good solution is MCMMO, which basically ADDS onto the basic survival experience without making it too different.

The only people that play CS:GO other than the kids under 12 are the "big boys" that think they're all that because they play CS:GO.

It is a shame, I try to get my server a little different, with an rpg feel programmed npc chat, quests, an older world that has not been reset for 4 years, more of a live survive and explore the world type server. it's hard to get anyone on - I think most come on and say "where's the hungergames" or whatever mini game is most popular and leave, so I only assume they don't want more involved servers just super minigame servers..

I like building my world so I carry on and some regulars come and go but hey that's the way it goes

Hahaha, I love this.

I own a server but I know what I'm doing, I'm 18, and my Admins are also around my age, as I don't like kid admins. Kids tend to abuse commands and make other players quit.

Well, yeah, that is most of the status of my country server <Vietnam> owner dont know what to do, staff ban for no reason, some time it pissed me off, so i moved that aside and started my own server, not normal one, i want it to be fun, to be great for members, you can check it out in my snignature if you like (its a skyblock server)
Basicly, i dont use so much custom plugins, just combine it, i can make like 5 or 6 unique feature using chestcommand and permissionex ( try it, /cname, /prefix ) on my server, also i add events, which encourage players to have fun on the server
I dont say that my server is really good or something, i appricieted if there is suggestion and if the idea is good there are always reward for them
Maybe chat is a bit dirty i said ( if there is), and swearing, advertising server urghh, get tired of that, usually people who do that get muted for like 1 day ( thats minimum)
Its not like i am telling about my server, i just can give you some idea for the one who have a dusty server and have staff like a 8 years old kid, hope this help for the one who are reading this!

P.S: Sorry of my language i am Vietnamese and my grammar is bad

Hey, all those trashy servers give you A chance to get a new highscore in the not-so-well-known "How fast can you get yourself banned?" contest.
Besides that, though, there are alot of kids who waste their parents money on these little servers of theirs. They like the power they get and they like to feel better then everyone, they care if your resource pack just got over 1000 downloads, as for them, they just got an average of 12 players a day on their prison server. I have met many kids who act like they are great just cuz they have a server... But really, how many 10 year olds go on YouTube and do stuff so simular?
They act like they are big, they are the top, they just got 5 subs, wooooooooo! You just got 10 subs? Well they don't care, cuz their survival and factions server just reached 10 players daily. Of Course, they don't tell you that 4 of thlse people are staff members that happen to be the friend's of the owner in real life.
Are you insisting, though, that CS:GO beats out Minecraft in the players maturity and the game's quality? Are you ininsisting that us Minecraft fans are stupid and immature when you made the remark of leaving us for your friends in Counter Strike? I have never played Counter Strike but I can't imagine that the people there are better... Though I guess most of Them might just Be cussing, raging, immature 14 year olds, and, you know, that's only 4 years older than 10.

If I had a nickel for every butt hurt MC or any other game player who cries when getting legitimately banned for their stupidity and rude remarks to server staff, I'd be richer than Bill Gates!

The fact that he downs on people afterwards and calls them 9 year olds only proves his own immaturity... Sad but true.. Sorry for your luck bro. Tetris is 9 year old free tho...

The vast majority of Minecraft players are younger. You can't find the perfect server after looking through 5 servers, 10 servers, or possibly even 100. It can take months to find a server that suits you.

You want mature staff and a well made server with functional and not overused plugins?

Make your own server see how it goes for you.

or

Also, there is this server I recently joined and it is well made. It has custom plugins so none of the same overused plugins that all the "RPG" servers have.
Take a look: Faceland Ultimate RPG/Survival Server
Griefing is strongly discouraged (bannable) so that rants, tantrums, whining, etc. is less likely to happen and keep the game fun. People have made AMAZING builds because of this and the server owner even made waypoints so you can check some of them out.

If you decide to join, tell them NitroStarman sent ya!

I completely agree with what OP is saying. I see most people on here are arguing FOR the community, but I just can't. There are many great servers out there, but they are hidden by the thousands of poor ones that litter the community. Its so incredibly easy for someone to buy hosting and start as server that no one is bothering to learn how to actually do it correctly. Not to mention the much younger ones starting servers that are just too young to do it correctly.

I've always recommended that people who are new to hosting servers start with hosting it from their home system and learn the ins and outs before buying hosting. When you buy hosting you don't need to know the specifics, its just click and run.

I like to spend my time in the "recently updated" section looking at the newer servers and they are all a cookie cutter copy of the previous. Poorly built. Poorly staffed. Poorly owned. For people who are out there looking for a smaller server or a newer server or a tight knit community or a server offering the original gamemodes or a simpler server (I could go on) it becomes very difficult to find a decent one. Most servers that fit anything in this list are like the ones OP described.

I would like to invite you to come visit my server. I started up a server in January of 2015 for this exact reason. It hosts the original gamemodes, creative and survival. I've been running servers for over 3 years now and have started this one from scratch, building it from the ground up with everything I know. If you will take the time to visit I would love to hear what you think and how I can improve it further. I'm confident it will fit what your looking for.
