Like everyone else above, it takes a lot of time and effort, You just dont have a popular server in just the first couple days of launch! You need to have a dedicated staff that is willing to spend a lot of time on the server, Your staff also needs to be trustworthy, You need to build a Server on a Server (Computer). Or rent one. If you are going to be popular, you will need to put in MORE MONEY! You need to make sure that you have enough RAM to support a lot of players on the server, that is why many of the big servers ask for donations. You need to have good builds, not just a box and some torches, but make your build look like something it tooks months to build. Get different types of mini-games. The big thing, MAKE YOUR OWN MINI-GAME!!! Most popular servers have thier own minigames that make the server good. Invest into making plugins. Most popular servers have plugins. They use a combination of Custom or Public made plugins. Some good servers even make things excellent with just regular plugins. but try to invest to making custom plugins. Make sure everything works, nothing says stay away but a broken server.
Try to remember that people who own popular servers put in A LOT OF MONEY into it. So if you want to get a popular server, MAke sure it is up 27/7/365. It is ok to have some days where you are down for maintenance or any big change that needs to be done, but notify players about couple weeks to a month or more notice.
