I don't think they have plans on adding it into the game beyond creative mode. It used to serve the purpose of getting rid of water before the bucket was added or something like that.
Suck up one block of water but the water flows 16 blocks

It should suck up more water than a bucket and release more, can only be found in strongholds.
You get the sponge by hacking it in.
I know that, I ment in a future update there should be a way to get it and be a use for it.
