Vanilla or Plugins?

So I'm thinking about creating a community with a Minecraft server to play on. I, at first, really wanted to add a bunch of plugins to it and play on it with other people. I've always played vanilla or modded so I really never got around to messing with plugins before. I heard Mcmmo is fun and I would really like to have CustomHeads, but the idea of playing 1.8 vanilla with a bunch of people and then updating to 1.9 when a more stable version is released, is really appealing.
Anyways, the point of this post is what are your preferences? Would you prefer playing on a vanilla 1.8 server that'll update to 1.9 later on or plugins 1.8 server?

1.9 is still in snapshots. Spigot has come out for 1.8.8. I would chose using plugins.

I personally dont like plugins, unless they are custom made and the people in charge know how to make games out of them, like Hypixel. Otherwise, I would rather play on a vanilla server in 1.9, but that takes up a little extra RAM, and therefore more money.

And Id rather play on a modded server with plugins

+ Good luck playing on a server with no /sethome etc... Essentials is essential for any server....

I'd say plugins are better for servers. Otherwise, the game gets boring after you've done all the vanilla challenges. I partially agree with Josephpica -- I prefer scripting my own plugins instead of downloading them since it makes a server a lot more unique. But there's nothing wrong with using popular plugins -- they're popular because they're fun!

If you're really good at command blocks, you could honestly do most, if not all, the things any plugin can do. I would try that, honestly, it'd be cool.

Spigot/Bukkit offers a lot more flexibility than vanilla does. Simply put, they provide more than vanilla. There are different plugins that do different things. Some are tools for admin like WorldEdit, and some are for player experience like MCMMO. Either way, plugins accomplish more than vanilla can and more efficiently at that, so I'll never see any reason to use a vanilla server unless you just really want to play in snapshots.

Edit: Of course, you don't need to use any plugins that modify gameplay if you want to stick with a vanilla-style experience. However, having the ability to set warps (not for players), mute, and tempban as an admin is almost essential.

Bukkit can't do anything that isn't already possible in vanilla. Otherwise, we'd consider it a mod. If it can be done in bukkit or spigot, it can be done in vanilla.

I think a server with plugins is always more more interesting and will definitely be better - but only if you're considering making this a popular, known server community.

If it's just for friends and their extended friends Vanilla with Essentials and Bukkit will do fine (you really need your basic commands available, even on a vanilla server). Okay, so that's not really vanilla, but if you want some control over the game play even in the slightest, a few plug ins like these are 'essential'. You do not need to get game altering plug ins, in fact the afore mentioned plugins update often with Minecraft (as opposed to unique plugins which have to be reworked each time).

If you do decide to use plugins, the only way for it to really be successful is to get it professionally developed and do something unique. After all, why play on your server when you could play on a larger server with more people which has more game modes and the same plug ins? Just a thought; but definitely something to consider.

Thank you to everyone that replied! Sorry for the late thanks. I've been busy the last couple days lol Anyways, I'm going to continue thinking about it and get things figured out more. But thanks to what I've heard so far, I'm leaning more towards a plugins server. I'm not good with commands and I don't know how to make custom plugins either. So I might just stick with basic plugins, like Essentials. I do want to play with Mcmmo as well xP

THANKS AGAIN!
