Don't you find it funny how people IG or in the forums call using an item a certain way 'wasting' it?
Do you remember when slimeballs were just slimeballs? And snowballs were good for nothing but snow?
It's just funny hearing people say, "That's a waste of slimeballs!" or "You could have build something better with that, what a waste!" When only a few months ago they were saying they would never use certain items in the game.

Though I suppose that there are some that won't touch redstone, but that is for another reason entirely.

It's perfectly logical. You can't know that slimeballs will get a use so keeping it is a waste of space.
But that hasn't stopped people from stocking enderpearls before they knew what they were for has it?
