When it's a closed vote of a group, rather than an ear to its customer base... You get the Microsoft way.
I'd like that and other things... like not to have to mod to get more redstone capabilities and blocks. Why restrict the capability... because it makes no difference to their bottom line and some like to be the bawwsss more than perhaps what you or I would value.
This is where the following justifications of "it doesn't fit the game" or the ridiculousness of "it takes away from the creativity" come from... To give the player MORE to build with and do is a take away to you? Kay.
-end Tirade.
It'd be sick to be able to do something upside down wouldn't it?

thicker trapdoors

Would give builders who pay attention to detailed buildings a lot more opportunities and it would still feel like vanilla minecraft.
Trapdoors and walls can be used to add more depth instead though.

iirc the devs stated that it didnt feel like minecraft, so they rejected it

They rejected the idea so that people can be more creative with building.
