1) Finding the Directory
So you have just downloaded a .zip or .rar from a mod. In that file, you will see .class files and maybe some folders, on Windows 7, you haveto go to the start bar and type in %appdata%, On Windows XP you got to go to Run... at the right side of the start bar, then type %appdata%, then go to .minecraft then click on bin, right click minecraft.jar and open with WinRar, 7zip, any archive.
2) Installing the Mod
Ok, so now we have minecraft.jar open, then we want to delete Meta-INF in minecraft.jar and then you want to drag everything from the mod file to minecraft.jar

Minecraft Crashed?
Oh, make sure you delete META-INF , and sometimes mods have another way of installing.. Let's say dragging the zip/rar into a mods folder (make one if you don't have one) or, sometimes mods require other mods. Like let's say, Lapis Lazuli Tools mod requires Modloader
