How would I go about coding...

I want to create a notification system (for a project) that will send out a email when a new episode of a show you follow is out. Each person signs up on the site, adds the shows they want to follow and make us notify them about. But how would I go about finding each shows feed? Also would I need to use a third party program to send out the emails for us. //Thanks.

If you got any questions, ask me.

But MySQL itself doesn't actually send the email, PHP does, mysql just stores the email recipients.

As a web developer myself, I create websites using PHP. First you need to plan out how you are going to get the episodes release date. Second, Jquery is not capable of this. It is a browser language not capable of sending Emails, or checking required resources.

I suggest PHP, it is the most used website programming language on the web. Also another thing you might want to look into is Cron jobs, they are scheduled tasks that can execute PHP scripts, or any other type of file.

Besides that, it seems like a good idea, but you will need lots of experience with PHP, or any other language to make something as complicated as this.

Also, you will need experience with Databases, most likely MySQL, since it is the most used for web hosts. You have to be able to securely run database queries through php, or people could possibly sql inject into your database.

I am mainly a web designer and I know coding but I wanted to try something harder and make a project that I will put out to the public.

So you got any idea of how each code would look like? The follow, unfollow, notification code.

It all depends on your login system, the website, the database, everything.

Hmm, alright well I want to create some kinda project. What suggestion do you got for a easy project that still would be able to attract people.

Example, video sharing site, share files and such.

I understand that, but how will I find the RSS feeds or something like it, to let the system know when a new epsiode is out of that show and then send out a message to each person that follows that show. And how will I split it from the people following / not following that show, I don't want everyone to get a message ofc.

You can use php to do that BUT! be SUPER careful with security make sure all the php files are OUTSIDE the web server and you destroy the password/username variables as soon as you use them someone getting into your database could be BAD

Most MySql login systems provide really secure encryption, so that won't matter. @Note you could use an RSS feed (which people could subscribe to) and then they could set it up to email them using a web service (loads of services provide RSS to Email)

Would it be possible to make them subscribe to an RSS feed without them knowing?

Could I put a "makeup" over it? So it doesn't look like their subscribe to a RSS feed.

Well there is MailChimp, its pretty good, but not really what you are looking for.

On MailChimp you can manually send out custom-made forms to your subscribers, and all you need to do is put the video in. Visitors can subscribe using a special link. I dont know if you can get the feed, but in my opinion its good enough.

http://www.mailchimp.com

PS. Its SUPER easy to use!

Thanks, but it's not what I am looking for and it won't be able to do what I want it to do.

Mysql is a database, not a mail client. It can hardly send emails at all (and I don't think it can do it without sendmail) and what it can do in that regard is so inefficient compared to something like php, pearl or even bash you would be crazy to ever waste your time doing it.

You use sendmail to send emails if you are in any type of Linux environment. If you are using windows? I have no idea, never bothered with it.

As for Programming information a good place to start is MythTV, they have schedules direct, and API for television/cable programming information.

He is right, MySQL is a database, no capability of sending emails at all, StarGuy you obviously don't know what it is. MySQL is simply made to store data in records form, very fast reading and writing.

I would be very concerned about putting the load of sending e-mails on my database server (small though it may be). I might suggest one of these alternatives:

Have application logic detect the need to send an e-mail and send it.
Have a MySQL trigger populate a table that queues up the e-mails to be sent and have a process monitor that table and send the e-mails.

Alright, then that question is out of the way. But how about getting the feed for each show, so when a new show is out, the "system will send out a email to that person".

What language? Is it a website?

Well the language haven't been chosen yet, but either php or jquery.

And yes it will be a website.

Well I can't tell you how to code it if you don't know what language you want to use.
