I've used a lot of mods and am surprised how much of a difference they can make. i want to get into modding, just wondering but is it possible to make a mod without having to use programs such as mcp and stuff?
Also can someone please link me to a good beginners modding tutorial/tutorials that doesn't involve videos?

Mod makers are cheap and lame. You can attempt to decompile minecraft yourself, but that would be much more exhausting than just using MCP. Don't be lazy, learn the basics.
