Modded Minecraft on servers?

So I like playing on servers... but I also enjoy modded Minecraft. I use a 9-year-old Mac, so taking mods in and out of the folder is a PAIN. Can I install mods that are NOT client-side, and still join servers? Or would that break my Minecraft/something else horrible. Please help.

I don't believe that mod would be compatible with any servers that are not running it, if you are able I would recommend setting up another Minecraft profile, not an account, and having that without that mod or only some QoL client-side mods that don't break server ToS and use that to play on non modded servers.
