Need Help With My Kit Plugin [MetaData]

I'm currently working on a Bukkit plugin and I'd like to be able to allow users to receive items that have metadata. I'm pretty sure to do this I would have to split the item ID and the MetaData so it would be (ItemID:MataData). But I'm not entirely sure on how to do that. Any help?
