I am also looking for help on learning how to mod. I have been looking around and here is some stuff I found:
The #1 finalist for the minetorials contest (here on PMC) wrote a very good modding tutorial. Another option is to find mod-maker program, that you can type in what you want it to make, and it will generate the files for you.
That may not be exactly what you are looking for, but also, asTikeRike said: Google some.
