I was thinking about an idea for a Minecraft server...
I thought about giving away 100$ to somebody who can compete & complete a set of challenges.
So my only question, would anyone actually want to join this kind of server/event?

True that, but if its only 5 people that want in, I don't bother making a server for it.
On the other side, if like 50-250 people wanted to join, I would do it.
