The History of The Great War
Written by ThatBookGirl

In the Land of Polpero, where nature and humankind lived in harmony with one another, the Great King gave birth to two sons. The firstborn, Prince Kirand, was born swift and well, while two years later, Prince Tirinoth was born slow and killed the Queen. The Great King and Kirand found it hard to accept the boy for something he had no way of preventing or even knowing, but they did their best.

Many years later, the Great King decided to divide up the lands of his kingdom, allowing men and woman who had done the kingdom a great service to prosper and show themselves worthy of this gift. The greatest prize of all was Arlin, a vast and wealthy city with many mines stocked with rare ores and farms fat with wheat and meat. This was passed down to Kirand, who had always shown himself to be generous, more likely to be moved by a suffering child than a pile of glittering diamonds.

But a shadow had followed Tirinoth all his life and the Great King saw it. Tirinoth would stare at emeralds and gold toys, rolling them around in his hands, shying away from contact with other young nobles. And if he did speak, it was with a forked tongue. Yet, his judgement had always been fair and despite his self-induced isolation, Tirinoth cared about the land and justice. So the Great King gave him the rule of Dysmere, a smaller realm without the same wealth as Arlin, but populated with good people who would celebrate Tirinoth’s fair rule.
That was until Tirinoth saw an injustice in the world.
A plague had spread across the land, a disease that spoiled crops, killed livestock and made the people wither away. Arlin suffered little, they had the money for medicines and care wards, while Dysmere had neither. Tirinoth went to his brother and asked for help, but Arlin’s supplies were running low and as a King, Kirand had to look to his people before his brother. He gave Tirinoth only what he could spare and Tirinoth cursed him in his Halls, screaming injustice at Arlin, listing all the advancements his brother’s kingdom possessed and yet Tirinoth only had enough medicine to save maybe a hundred of his own people? Tirinoth would not listen to reason, he had felt like a shunned outsider since he was born and now because of his family’s prejudice his people would die in their beds. And in the corner of his mind, those glittering diamonds grew all the brighter.

After most of the sickness had past, Tirinoth gathered his army together, calling to other realms to his aid and proclaiming that Arlin never even had the plague, that the King Kirand was corrupt and kept all the goods for himself. What would happen to them when the Great King passed away and Kirand took up the mantle? Lies and deceit always finds a home in the minds of others, so he quickly had an worthy of battle.
But the Great King, Kirand and other good rulers saw through such evil and rallied together to form a great host, lieutenants and captains of all ranks, Squires, Knights, Barons, Overlords, Kings and Queens all flocked to the Great King’s aid.

It is hard to tell when the Great War ended. Many hundreds of thousands of people fell on both sides as Tirinoth’s lust for power and riches grew. He turned against his own people, who begged him to stop in his mad quest. Public executions began in Dysmere and soon Tirinoth had a war at home as well as abroad. Bodies filled the graveyards with those who spoke out against him, filling tomes where the plague still held sway in the darkest halls. But Arlin remained untouched, no matter how close Tirinoth’s army got or how many canons fired upon its beautiful churches and deep Libraries, Arlin would not fall.

King Tirinoth was defeated. Dysmere was laid bare and burning, the few people left alive after his rule fled into the mountains, where they learnt to live off what they could mine and gathered in the woods around their new home. And what of king Tirinoth? He was unshaken, but his mind had grown corrupt and bent on destruction: he refused to be defeated while King Kirand and Arlin lived on in people’s hearts.

The Demon Astaroth was generally known to be a bedtime story, something to keep children in bed and out of trouble. But Tirinoth had been a good scholar in his youth and knew that all legends have an element of truth. He called necromancers and other such folk to his Halls and commanded them to tell him whether the Demon lived, and then where might he go to find him.

All of them knew where the Shrine of Astaroth was: down in the deepest, darkest dungeons that the world had to offer. But nothing would attack you, for the Demon always had plans for those who sought his help. Even the greatest and cruellest of these men polluting Dysmere’s halls warned the fallen King against his quest, that Astaroth never answered his followers in the way he intended and it might be his plan all along to ensnare Tirinoth into his service. Maybe that shadow that had followed Tirinoth all his life was real, and maybe it had a shape? And if that shape took the form of Astaroth, poor Tirinoth had only a few chances left to salvage what he could of his life and his home.

But Tirinoth’s mind had grown into a dark places, where only the promises of victory leaked in through the cracks and grew into those glittering diamonds. So Tirinoth went to find the Shrine of Astaroth. Just like the necromancers told him, nothing stopped him, nothing crawled out of the great caverns of darkness to clutch at his legs and drag him down. Astaroth was waiting.

The Shrine wasn’t as grand as the fallen King imagined, it was a plain thing with many runes and one great face of the Demon carved into the wall beneath everlasting candles that glowed red. Nevertheless, Tirinoth got onto his knees and begged the Demon to give him the power and strength to take over Arlin and butcher his brother on the stairs of his Throne. To make people run before him and to make his rebellious people follow him like a dog does its master.

Nothing happened and Tirinoth found himself incredibly tired and fell asleep beneath the Shrine, only to wake up in his own Throne. No one was around and everything was still. Had he dreamt it all?

Suddenly, like a roar down from the sky, lightening slashed into Dysmere, striking the stinking tomes filled with bodies and all those yet still living in Dysmere. Tirinoth’s halls were filled with screams and he saw the earth over freshly dug graves begin to shift. He feels power fill his veins.
Then he heard a low laugh right behind him, as if it was his shadow mocking him. Tirinoth felt heat and a hot bubbling, raising his hands above him only for him to meet lava. It burnt him down to his bones and perhaps would have burnt all of him, had not Astaroth have plans of his own.

Rumours have reached Arlin about a great undead army gathering together, commanded by a creature known as the Tall King, a skeleton wearing Tirionth’s crown. King Kirand knew his brother was lost and whatever shape or form he had taken under the power of the Demon could not be matched by his own men.
King Kirand sends word out to all the kingdoms in the land and even those over the Great Seas. He’s begging for heroes, pleading for men and women to stop this madness and help him fight back the forces of the undead.
Will you answer him?
