I guess I'll help you. There are many things to making a minecraft server. I'll post the client what I use.

1st. Downloading the Server Client (This is what I use and it is awesome) ((Many people use it))

I went to the website bukkit (just google bukkit, you should find it)
Download craftbukkit from the webpage.
Make a new folder on your computer and put craftbukkit into it.
Copy the code from the craft bukkit wiki (go to the website) and create a new text document.
Paste the code into the text document and save it as run.bat
Go to system properties and open it with notepad, adjust the server to your needs there (Mobs spawn, Online mode, World Name, Flying allowed, you get the picture)
Now double click run.bat and run your server, windows firewall should try to stop it, this is normal, just click keep unblocking (unblock it)
Your server should be good now, Don't X off the run.bat thing that shows up, that is YOUR server. If you X it off, the server turns off (DONT EVER X OFF THE SERVER!!!) The server wont save, type stop into the server to turn it off.

2nd. Online Mode/Opening Ports (Port Forwarding)

This part is probally the hardest thing in the set-up (Note, if you dont get it right, try watching a video on youtube)
First on your computer click start>run>cmd
On cmd, type ipconfig and some numbers should show up. Theres 2 important numbers there, your router Ip and your Private Ip. Copy them both.
Use the router Ip and post it into the bar at the top of your computer screen. (ON THE INTERNET)
Now, go to your routers log in page and log in. Default logins are username:Admin password: admin
Now go to your routers advanced tab and look for connection settings or sometimes firewall settings.
There, look for the port forwarding tab or page.
Set up a new port with the port number 25565 and if you have a name option, name it minecraft. Then there will be a place to put a Ip address.Put in your Private Ip Address and save the open port as a TCP or UDP port.
Now go to whatismyip.com and check the Ip address because this will bethe address people use to join your server.

3rd. Installing Plugins
With the bukkit server client, installing plugins are as easy ans 1..2..3!
1.Go the to get plugins tab at the bukkit website (again google it, same spelling((Bukkit))
2.Find a plugin you want!
3.Download it straight into the plugins folder in the bukkit server file (the file you created to put your server into)

Please give me a lot of credit for this tutorial because this took forever for me to get my server up and running. To tell you the truth, I've been trying to get my server up all summer and I finnaly got it to work. Before you ask any questions, double check what I posted because there's nothing I hate worse than having to repeat myself.

Hope this helped
