Help with server

In all the time ive played minecraft i have never been able to figure this out how is servers get popular what is it they do that makes people want to hop into their server instead of mine i am always advertising i try my best to be unique and fun server i have worked very hard and only one server ive ever owned got around 40 people on for about 2 days then i was hacked because it was a cracked server then i decided i am no longer making cracked servers so i have a question for the people of PMC is there some secret are people paying bucket loads to advertise their server or are they just lucky ? so please help me out awnser this question as i know many people are wodering this question now i am taking action and finding out how its done
